April 13, 2012

I had been happily anticipating preparing this first post-legislative update.  Instead, I now feel a deep sadness writing of the last days of the 2012 Legislative Session.  That we allowed these days to be dominated by gambling interests is to me inexcusable.  Now we have many good health, education, and public safety programs that will go without funding.  These are programs that would directly benefit the people of Maryland, including our children.

It is not yet clear when, or even if, the governor will call us into a special legislative session to remedy this situation.  And, of course, the issue of expanding gambling in our state may rear its head again.

Below are several articles which I think capture quite well various aspects of this budget situation.

It is clear that for me personally it is most important to remain positive and remember that life is a gift.  Again the Dali Lama comes to mind, "We are here to be happy."  I also am helped by Thich Nhat Hanh's "Being Peace."

I will be back in touch with another update when I learn whether and when we will go back into a special session.

Lloyd and I leave tomorrow for a week's driving trip through the North Carolina mountains.  We have some set places to stay and will otherwise "wing it."  Our plans seem just perfect for this year.

Be sure to relish this beautiful spring weekend and be well.
