December 27, 2012

Lloyd and I had a beautiful, peaceful, and happy Thanksgiving and Christmas season in our extended family.  It has been such a joy to have our kids and grandkids filling our home with laughter. How can our youngest, twins Will & Christine, be eleven already? On Christmas day, Zach recited some of his favorite poems for the whole family.

Lloyd and I are in a practice of gratitude for each moment, realizing that it could be otherwise. ("Otherwise" - one of my favorite poems by Jane Kenyon.) We look forward to having the same peace and joy in the upcoming year, 2013, and we hold an image of your having the same.

I am going on a non-commercial tour of India, led by Gandhi's grandson, from the end of December through the first two weeks of January.  I will miss the first few days of the legislative session, the days during which we do no substantive work.  Although I value the ceremonial aspects of these first few days, this tour following Gandhi's path of non-violence and passive resistance through India is a once in a lifetime opportunity.  It is so clear that we need Gandhi's wisdom throughout our world today.  My intention is to immerse myself in his surroundings and words so that I can draw on it in my own life.

Mortgage settlement: not enough relief;  Despite deal reached with banks, too many Maryland families are still losing their homes
(This Sun article on mortgage settlement covers some of the same facets of this issue that I discussed on the Comcast interview of December 19; see News.)

USM regents acknowledge violation of state's open meeting act during Big Ten talks; University System of Maryland regents pledged to work with open meetings compliance board
(Strengthening our open meetings laws has been a priority of my work in the legislature.  Regardless of how you may feel about the Big Ten, the Sun article below shows that we need more enforcement provisions in these laws.)

What Maryland can do to reduce gun violenceOur view: Federal legislation on gun crime is essential, but a state licensing system for gun purchases would do enormous good
(This Sun editorial gives some very good advice to the legislature regarding gun protection.  I will do my best to see that we heed it.)

No study, no fracking; Our view: The potential impact of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in Maryland, both good and bad, is too great not to merit a thorough, unbiased study
(
I completely agree with Delegate Mizeur's opinion on fracking expressed in the Sun editorial below.  I am working with her on this issue.)
