Zach's Memorial Mass

March 29, 2014

The memorial service held for Zach last Friday clearly and beautifully captured his essence, from the music of the Temptations to the words spoken about him by family, friends, priests, and monsignors. Zach said he wanted us to celebrate his life, not mourn his death. The service certainly fulfilled his desire.

I know Zach loved it.

It was a joy so see many of you present.

Thank you for your many expressions of recognition of the beauty of Zach's life. He continues to be with me in every sunrise and sunset, and all the moments in between.

The beautiful poem "Zachary Monnett Lederer" was composed by a friend of his mom, Chris, and included in the printed program for his Memorial Mass.

Peace,

Liz

Audrey Robbins Humanitarian Awards

To receive this honor at the Association of Community Services (ACS) meeting today was a great joy for me.

We in Howard County have a deep responsibility to care for those who cannot care for themselves. Because we are one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, our responsibility is greater. We also have the benefit of the great example set by Columbia's founder, Jim Rouse. He made it very clear that our new town would be both racially and economically inclusive. Today the economic divide is growing in our world, nation, and county. To reverse this trend is our greatest challenge as human beings.

The Sun: Volunteers recognized with annual ACS awards; Audrey Robbins Humanitarian Awards to be presented March 28

Housing

I find this research done by the Urban Institute both sad and troubling. It shows Howard to be at the bottom of the counties in the Baltimore region in the number of rental units available to our lowest income residents compared to the demand. It also shows that we have the biggest drop in percentage of the number of low income renter households and the available units available.

The Sun: Shortage of housing for poorest families grows

Foreclosures

Our state has many good public programs to promote economic justice. Clearly mortgage foreclosures are not one of the areas where we shine.

The Sun: Maryland posts second-highest foreclosure rate in nation

Mental Health and the Columbia Mall Tragedy

It is very important that we respect the human rights of all human beings, and that definitely includes those with mental illness.

So, although I believe it is imperative that we proceed very deliberately, I do think we need to give consideration to the legislation described in this article.

The Sun: Legislation pushes involuntary mental health treatment; Mental health community divided over issue

Partisan Politics

Dan Rodricks is a regular columnist with The Baltimore Sun who definitely and thankfully doesn't play it safe.

The Sun: With Democrats like these, who needs GOP? Cutting taxes on the estates of the wealthy, but hesitating on minimum wage

Peace.
